Nerd Girl Industries Presents Issue #17 Business Mentorship and Use Cases

Hey Reader!

Welcome to Issue #17 of NGI Presents!

Business Mentorship

Mr. Lisa and I attended a walk-in business mentorship event last week, and Erin, the mentor, was amazing. We narrowed down my job title, what I offer, and more. We wrote my elevator pitch and used Mr. Lisa as my fake potential client to run the language by him. If he could understand what I'm selling in layman's terms, then so could my potential client.

(Note: Mr. Lisa is not on social media, so the language that I and Erin understand is not the same as what Mr. Lisa understands. He's imperative to this process!)

Myself and Mr. Lisa thought of having him do general IT services but decided against it after meeting with Erin. It goes back to too much diversifying and confusing potential clients with what I offer. With that being said, Mr. Lisa is now my intern of sorts, who does things when I'm overwhelmed with client work, which has been working great.

Thanks to Erin, I now have a title that is better understood (content strategist) and can drill down to what I offer. I'm almost out of business cards, and I'll need more when I attend the RWA conference in July, so they need to be refreshed. I'll need to update the website as well.

The other thing Erin and I talked about was honing in on my goals, which are the following:

  • Bill enough hours for us to live on NGI income
  • Afford to have a membership at the local co-working space
  • Get the website professionally done

There is a lot to do with NGI, and I love that we keep evolving.

Creating a Use Case

NGI is on X, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and Pinterest. Coupled with client work, my Jane Austen empire, and volunteer work, NGI's social media is woefully blank. In fact, I've thought about pulling NGI off of all social media because I do not have time, which, honestly, I might still do.

However, Mr. Lisa pointed out that I need to demonstrate my ability to deliver what I sell, and I should create a use case. This is an excellent idea, and since my Jane Austen empire is fairly established over NGI, it's my guinea pig. Good thing I'm already tracking analytics!

Tech Tip

Tip: Create strong passwords

Why: Mr. Lisa worked in cybersecurity for many years, and I'm using his expertise to create a class on cybersecurity 101 for the rest of us. One of the primary things we're going to teach people is the creation of strong passwords. The industry recommendation is to use 16 characters that include numbers, letters, and special characters. It would take a hacker a billion years to crack that password. If your password is eight characters, it could take up to a few days to crack. Also, avoid reusing passwords, especially for financial and health services. The next issue's tip is on password managers.
