Hey Reader!
The Lisa Rabey Empire
As my empire grows, I've created a one-stop shop for all things Lisa at lisarabey.com. How is this different than my linktr.ee landing page? I needed a place to direct clients, workshop coordinators, and others interested in me with links to various Empire websites along with descriptions of theose websites. linktr.ee doesn't offer an option to describe the link, hence the new website.
(linktr.ee/heroineinabook is also linked from lisarabey.com if you want to get super granular about where to find me.)
I've got my fingers in many pies! While my empire seems like a lot, honestly, it's fun and allows me to grow creatively.
I whipped up lisarabey.com in under an hour by turning off the forward (it pointed to lisarabeywritesstuff.com), installing WordPress, and designing with a built-in template. It's a two-page site (one landing page and the other page is the contact form). If you click on any of my website links, the sites are super clean and minimalist. I'm not selling design or development services, and I like being straight to the point, so I don't need my website to be fancy. I also want visitors to find what they need logically.
I'm so impressed with WordPress's built-in site builder that I may dump Elementor for it. Elementor is $99/year for three sites, so it's not badly priced. The hiccup is it's super powerful and beyond what I need.
Geeze, I did not think this section would be so long. Moving on!
Nerd Nite
This past week, I presented at Nerd Nite TC, and it was a lot of fun! My presentation, Not Your Mother's Librarian, was well received. I invited all my bosses from all the various libraries where I work. They didn't show up (which I expected), but several librarians and library workers did show up from those libraries!
Dozens of librarians and library workers across the state vetted the deck. I emailed the library cabal email list and got a lot of interest in the topic and a lot of support from them.
I've been commiserating with Lindsay about how much you feel better when you have employers who care about you and are kind. My clients have also been really great. My mental health has improved dramatically in the last six months, even though I'm hustling all over the place.
Workshops
A new four-week email workshop of mine started this week! I was thrilled with myself for having built out the lectures beforehand and scheduling reminders to post the lectures. Look at me adulting!
The topic is social media on a budget. I taught this workshop for RWA's Indie Author Weekend this past weekend to really positive responses and a decent size crowd. It was a matter of taking the social media presentation I used in the past and breaking it down into weekly chunks and then breaking it down again into thrice weekly chunks. I had help with the breakdown, and I ended up re-organizing the content for a better flow.
I'm teaching more workshops in the future across various topics. I've got four classes to hawk. I cannot believe I never thought of doing this in the past! The president of one of the writer groups I do social media for recommended I teach for them (and get paid), and it snowballed from there. I've started creating a list of places to reach out to for the end of 2025 and into 2026.
The best part? I'm getting paid for all of it.
Udemy
Speaking of side hustles, I also want to get my workshops onto Udemy. Udemy is the same concept as Coursera but instead of having a college or university teach the class, patrons like me can upload their classes and get paid as people buy the class. (Once the classes are approved, of course.) I searched for classes like mine but didn't find much, so I think I can do something with this. Classes are passive as people buy them rather than having a start or end date.
Mr. Lisa got me a fancy webcam and profesh microphone for content creation, so I should have good equipment. We need to get a green screen for the background.
When will this start? Good question! I'll keep you updated!
Social Media Tip
Tip: Lead magnets and why you need them
Why: In issue #12 of NGI Presents, I discussed newsletters and why you need one. I also mentioned you need a lead magnet to get subscribers to your newsletter.
What exactly is a lead magnet?
You are promising a lead magnet to the potential subscriber in exchange for their email address. Most importantly, lead magnets must be something your subscriber cannot get anywhere else.
Your lead magnet needs to be:
- Unique
- Relevant
- Targets your audience
- Helpful
(This is a small list of what a lead magnet should be.)
What kind of things do you offer potential subscribers?
- eBooks
- Videos
- Access to a private community
- Worksheets
- Email course
(For more ideas, check out my free lead magnet list!)
For NGI, I offer numerous free resources publicly, but for potential new subscribers, I offer a social media audit template. I recently implemented this, so if you're a subscriber and did not get the social media audit template link, email me so I can hook you up!)
